May 2009 — IDC released a quarterly update to their Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, citing market share figures for the 1st calendar quarter of 2009 (1Q09). Consider these telling facts:

Fact 1: For the 28th consecutive quarter, 7 years, HP is the #1 vendor in worldwide server shipments. HP shipped more than 1 out of every 3 servers worldwide and captured 35.7 percent total unit shipment share.

HP shipped over 148,000 more servers than #2 Dell.
HP shipped 2.5 times as many servers as #3 IBM and 9.0 times as many as #4 Sun.

HP gained most total server unit market share year over year of the top five vendors (+2.0 percentage points).

HP was #1 (tied) in total server revenue market share.

Fact 2: HP extended the lead in the blade server market, with a 52.2% revenue share, and a 52.3% unit share.

HP shipped more than twice as many blade servers as any other vendor.

HP gained 2.2 points of revenue market share while IBM lost 3.1 points of revenue share to fall to 24.9%. r.

Dell is a distant third in blade server revenue with 8.6% share.
 

Fact 3: For the 51st consecutive quarter, more than 12.5 years, HP ProLiant is the x86 server market share leader in both factory revenue and units 1, shipping more than 1 out of every 3 servers in this market with a 36.4% unit share.

HP’s x86 revenue share was 15.1 points higher than its nearest competitor, Dell who lost 0.8 points year over year

HP’s x86 revenue share was 20.0 percentage points higher than IBM.
 

Fact 4: HP is the number 1 supplier of Itanium (EPIC) based systems based on worldwide unit volume and worldwide factory revenue.

In the combined EPIC+RISC market, HP gained 3.8 points of unit share year over year, the most among the top five vendors in this market.
 

Fact 5: HP is #1 in Windows® revenue and units worldwide.

HP has a commanding 37.7% revenue share of the Windows market and leads the nearest competitor, Dell, by 14.5 percentage points.
 

Fact 6: HP is #1 in Linux® revenue, 37.5%, and units, 38.8%.

In terms of Linux revenue share HP leads #2, IBM, by 18.0 points and #3, Dell, by 21.6 points. HP shipped 13.8 times the number of Linux servers than Sun did.

Fact 7: HP is #1 in high-end UNIX revenue and units.

In terms of high-end UNIX revenue HP has a 34.2% share, 7.0 points higher than IBM and 19.0 points higher than Sun.
 

Fact 8: For the 3 major operating environments UNIX, Windows and Linux combined (representing 99.1% of all servers shipped worldwide), HP is number 1 worldwide in server unit shipment and revenue market share.

HP holds a 35.7% unit market share worldwide, which is 2.5 times more than IBM’s unit market share and 8.9 times the unit share of Sun.

HP holds a 33.7% revenue market share worldwide which is 2.6 times the revenue share of Dell and 2.8 times the revenue share of Sun.
 

Fact 9: For the 1st Quarter of 2009, HP outperformed the market in the following segments: Blades, x86, RISC+EPIC, Itanium, Windows and Unix volume in both revenue and units, as well as total total server, total Unix and Linux unit shipments.

HP outpaced IBM in Blades, Windows and Unix high-end units and revenue market share gain year over year as well as in total server, Linux, x86 and RISC+EPIC unit share gain year over year.

HP outpaced Dell in total server, x86 and Windows revenue and unit market share gain year over year as well as blade server revenue gain year over year.
